  • Don’t Just Go to College — Go Far: Study abroad can be possible for everyone

Welcome to the 2018–2019 edition of the Winds of Change Special College Issue. This year our higher education edition is extra special because we’re marking a milestone birthday — this is the 25th year AISES has published a guide to making college choices that’s specially tailored to Indigenous students. The schools that made it onto our list of Top 200 Colleges for Indigenous Students have been vetted by an independent researcher who looked specifically at their support for Indigenous students as well as at other data you’d expect on a list like this. As you’ve come to expect in this issue, we’ve included profiles of several different colleges, along with personal profiles of students.

Welcome to the Winds of Change 2018 National Conference Wrap-Up issue. Even if you weren’t able to be with us in Oklahoma City, you can share the energy of that incredible event through the pictures and stories in this annual digital issue. We are especially grateful that we had so many members of our Council of Elders with us to remind us to keep our traditional values close and “Honor the Past” through our actions. Attendees were also eager to “Be the Future,” and they descended on the College and Career Fair to find out firsthand about opportunities on campus and in the professions. We hope you enjoy revisiting your favorite conference highlights in this special issue, and that you are already planning to be there next year for a reenergizing gathering with your AISES family.

  • 25 Native STEM Enterprises to Watch: Look to tribes and Native business owners for opportunities in Indian Country and beyond
  • Indigenous Knowledge: Integration with mainstream knowledge can lead to the best outcomes
  • AISES Professional Awards: Meet the 2018 winners

Welcome to the Fall 2018 issue of Winds of Change! This annual National Conference edition shines a light on what we’re here for, coming as it does during the most exciting time of the year for AISES family. This year’s conference theme — Honor the Past. Be the Future. — is especially resonant because it echoes what we do at AISES. Recognizing each other’s academic and career accomplishments is an important way AISES supports the Indigenous STEM community. The most visible recognition is the AISES Professional Awards presented at the National Conference. Another way we acknowledge STEM achievements is our annual look at “25 Native STEM Enterprises to Watch,” found in this issue.
