How to Make the Most of the AISES National Conference

It’s true what they say — you get out of it what you put into it. That’s especially true of conferences. Just look around and you’ll see a big difference between proactive participants and passive attendees. Showing up ready to hit the ground running will make the three conference days a much better use of your time than just showing up and winging it. When you map out your conference plans, you maximize chances to network, strategically attend sessions, and get on the radar of the schools and organizations you want to target. Make It Your AISES National Conference. There’s no opportunity like the AISES National Conference — the three-day event is unique in that it’s specifically planned to educate and inspire all members of the AISES family. The themed event has a packed agenda that draws thousands of attendees to showcase award-winning research, advance Indigenous representation in STEM, develop leadership skills, and enjoy cultural activities.

Pack a practical suitcase. Before you take off for Minneapolis, think about what you’ll want when you get there. Arrive with your favorite way to take notes and a couple of neat, business casual outfits that will look — and make you feel — pulled together. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Download the conference app. You’ll have the information you need to navigate the conference, along with real-time pointers from other attendees. Once you pick up your conference credentials, you’ll be ready to tackle the options at the Minneapolis Convention Center and the app will guide you to all you want to see. You won’t want to miss the important speakers at the Opening Ceremony and Closing Banquet — or the Powwow! Of course, the College and Career Fair and the conference sessions draw large crowds.

Prepare an elevator pitch. Come prepared with a summary of who you are and why you’re there that’s concise enough to be delivered during an elevator ride. While you likely won’t deliver this in an actual elevator, it’s great to have something prepared so you can confidently introduce yourself to recruiters, other professionals, or the person sitting next to you at a session. Something like, “Hi, I’m Mia. I’m a software engineer at company X and I’m hoping to expand our internship program.” It’s basic networking — that person may be able to suggest someone for you to talk to, and in turn you might have a tip for them.

Take a tour. On Thursday you’ll have a chance to tour the brand-new Red Lake Nation College Minneapolis Site, the first tribal college campus in an urban setting. Or step into the future of sports science with a behind-the-scenes tour of Mayo Clinic Square in downtown Minneapolis, home of the Minnesota Lynx and the Timberwolves. Explore the cutting-edge Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Complex and learn how the sports medicine team use state-of-the-art tools to improve performance and prevent injuries. Be strategic. With nearly 200 exhibitors expected at the College and Career Fair, you’ll want to head into the hall knowing who you want to meet and where to find them (check the exhibit hall floor map in your conference program). Do some homework before heading to Minneapolis so you can have informed conversations, maximize your time at each booth, and leave a positive impression.

Be selective. Here again, you’ll want to be strategic and not just wander into the any session. Spend time reading through the session descriptions in your conference program, and focus on the ones that are most meaningful to you. Map out how to get there on time, and show up ready to take notes. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or approach the presenter afterward — questions show presenters you’re engaged in their topic and serve as a perfect opportunity to network and exchange business cards.

Follow through. Don’t let new introductions be forgotten. While business cards may seem old school, it takes less time to hand someone a card than it does to add a contact to your phone. Bring plenty of updated business cards that you can give to people as you meet them. And don’t forget to ask for their cards. The goal is to return home with a stack of cards to add to your own networking list. Remember to reach out later and begin fostering these new relationships.

Use social media. Social media can be a great way to enhance your conference experience. Follow AISES social media channels and see if AISES is following people you may want to connect with. Also, AISES may provide updates to attendees prior to the conference or share new information during the event. Even once you return home from Minneapolis, you may find it helpful — or even just fun — to scroll through conference content.

The AISES National Conference is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Indigenous professionals in the STEM fields — not to mention expand your network, practice your presentation skills, and learn from others’ experiences. Keep these tips in mind to make the most of your time in Minneapolis.

What are your top three tips to help attendees get the most out of the National Conference?
Map out your must-dos.
Take a little time before the conference to look over the schedule. Pick a few sessions, events, or booths you don’t want to miss — it'll help you stay focused and get the most out of your time there. Download the conference app. Study the College and Career Fair floor exhibitor list.

Talk to people. Seriously, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself! Whether it’s someone at your table, a speaker, or someone in line for coffee, every conversation is a chance to learn something new or make a great connection. The person next to you might be timid too.

Try New Things. Whether it’s a cultural activity, a STEM demo, or volunteering for something new, step outside your usual comfort zone. The conference is a perfect place to explore, grow, and just have fun with the community.
