Being a college student is hard. You have to worry about classes, your living situation, whether you need to work, making friends, and so much more. It’s a lot, and it can be overwhelming. Luckily there are a number of different tools to help you successfully navigate your college career. Here are a few apps to keep you on top of everything from class to cash.

Danielle Boyer always has loved “cooking up” robots. So when she started public high school in her hometown of Troy, Mich., after years of homeschooling and volunteering as a science instructor and mentor to younger kids, she immediately joined a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team. It didn’t go exactly as Boyer hoped. In fact, it was a very difficult period for her. “I was a girl, and a coder, and the guys made it clear they really didn’t want me there.”

Whew! You’ve just finished another interview, and you’re hoping to hear back soon. You constantly check your email and phone, but nothing comes through. As the days go by and you don’t hear anything, you wonder what your status is. You contact the company. If you’re lucky, you hear back right away. If not, you’re just left wondering. So what can you do when you aren’t hearing back from prospective employers?

Working remotely can allow greater flexibility to set your own schedule, reduce commute time, and focus on work with minimal distractions. I distinctly remember growing up without ever seeing a Native dentist, doctor, or athlete. As a result, I never pictured myself growing into one of those roles. But somewhere along the way, I realized that I could do it. Now, in my senior year at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), I’m working on a dual degree in chemistry and American Indian studies — on my way to becoming the person I never saw: a Native American dentist.

At 15, Caleb Dunlap thought he wanted to become a doctor, but admits his grades could have been better. His parents divorced and often, he says, there wasn’t a lot of extra money for the family of five kids living in northern Minnesota. “I’m Ojibwe from Nagaajiwanaang, the Fond du Lac Reservation 30 miles from Chi-gami [the name his people call Lake Superior],” he says.

Rita Peterson is a busy woman. She runs a truly 21st-century company, one of the only woman-owned, Native American– owned, HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zone)-certified engineering services firms serving the Department of Defense around the country, around the globe, and even into space. Her brainchild, Caribou Th under LLC, is headquartered on the Lac Courte d’Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation in Hayward, Wis.
