June 2016

  • 10 Top STEM Fields: Look to these areas for career growth
  • Green Business: Native entrepreneurs make stewardship good business
  • AISES People: Meet our members
  • Paths in Education: Enrichment programs and internships for students and professionals

Welcome to the Summer 2016 issue of Winds of Change! It’s been an exciting few months at AISES, with events and milestones that include the “wrap” of our first two public service announcements thanks to generous funding from the Comcast Foundation. Other seasonal excitement, of course, comes from our graduating students. It rewarding to see so many of our talented young people cap their studies with a diploma and go on to their next step. Those who are heading for the job market will be interested in our annual look at 10 Top STEM Fields. Here you will find a rundown of areas where sustained short- and long-term growth is expected, along with a sample of organizations that hire and schools that train in those professions. Several of these top fields touch on climate change, renewable energy, and Earth-friendly enterprises in general, encompassing issues of concern to so many of us. You also can read about a few of the Native American entrepreneurs who are already working to promote sustainability and stewardship through their own flourishing businesses. Here at AISES we are thrilled to be helping members live their values as they pursue their own paths of stewardship.

Spring 2016

April 2016

  • The Top 50 STEM Workplaces: Organizations setting the standard for Native American STEM Professionals
  • It's No Secret: Cybersecurity opportunities are expanding
  • AISES People: Meet our Members
  • Career Builder: Opportunities in government, industry, and academia

Providing avenues for all members to engage with STEM — and with each othe4 — is critical to the AISES mission. Opportunities like the National American Indian Virtual Science and Engineering Fair (NAIVSEF) prove over and over how important they are to inspiring young people to get on a STEM path and stay there. Pre-college member Trentin Russell, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, is a great example. Although his first science fair project was mandatory, it triggered a fascination for physics, and now he spends his free time researching neutrinos. In "Last Word" mentor, Dr. Cynthia Welsh, talks about her belief in the power of science fairs to change lives. This issue is always a special one because it includes our annual roster of the Top 50 Workplaces for Native American STEM Professionals. Taking the spotlight in this edition’s Top 50 is aerospace giant The Boeing Company, observing its 100th anniversary this year.
