2017 Winds of Change Issues

College 2017

November 2017

  • Top 200 Colleges for Native Americans
  • Controlling Student Debt: How to take charge of your finances
  • Roots and Wings: Campus support networks help Native students stay grounded — and fly high
  • The Student Body: Individuals at several stages in the careers share their success stories and offer some tips for success

Welcome to the 2017–2018 edition of the Winds of Change Special College Issue! It is our 24th year of bringing our pre-college and undergraduate students’ information they can put to good use as they plan their future academic paths. As you research schools for your important next step, be sure to spend some time with the “Top 200 Colleges for Native Americans” listings. The tables include financial information, and that is important. You should factor in the cost of each school you are considering, because how much you ultimately pay for your degree will also affect your future. To help you think about those consequential student loan decisions, we have included a feature article on “Controlling Student Debt.” Also on the Top 200 tables is information about the Native community on campus and the various support programs offered by each school. While not every student is looking for a school with such services, these resources can be invaluable over the course of a college career. To give you an idea of what is available, the article “Roots and Wings” looks at some campuses with support programs in place.

2017 National Conference Wrap-Up

October 2017

  • Opening/Closing Ceremony Highlights
  • In the Winner's Circle: 2017 AISES Award Winners
  • College & Career Fair
  • Sessions Overview
  • Heard at the Conference
  • On the Scene

The photos and stories in the 40th Anniversary National Conference Wrap-Up edition of Winds of Change bring back wonderful memories of those busy, full days in Denver. From the moving Opening Ceremony to the inspiring Anniversary Gala that brought the conference to a fitting close, attendees had a chance to hear incredible speakers like Hattie Kauffman and Norbert Hill, learn at an amazing variety of sessions, create a brighter future at the Career and Opportunities Fair, network with new contacts, and socialize with old friends. One important part of the conference is bringing everyone up to date on exciting AISES news, like the launch of our two new advisory councils — the Tribal Nations Advisory Council (TNAC), whose inaugural meeting was held at the conference, and the Canadian Indigenous Advisory Council (CIAC). Both are poised to help AISES broaden our reach and advance our mission. Meeting first-time conference-goers, interacting with students, reconnecting with old friends, welcoming our sponsors and exhibitors, and taking time to listen to our elders — all are reminders that there is nothing like AISES and no experience like this one.

Fall 2017

September 2017

  • 25 Native STEM Enterprises to Watch
  • Hidden Native Figures: Three scientists blazed the trail for today’s women in STEM
  • 2017 Professional Awards Meet the inspiring recipients of this year’s honors
  • AISES People: Meet our members

As you can tell from the conference motto — 40 Years Supporting Native People in STEM – the whole AISES family will be marking this significant “ruby” milestone when we are all together in Denver. We are expanding our focus on tribal and Native-owned STEM enterprises. Here in Winds of Change you will find our inaugural look at "25 Native STEM Enterprises to Watch." Speaking of indigenous success in STEM, be sure to read about our own “Hidden Native Figures.” As in the movie Hidden Figures, we have picked three of the many — mostly unsung — women who have pioneered in the sciences, and we are shining a light on their contributions. We are also making sure other notable Native figures are not hidden. Read about the winners of this year’s prestigious Professional Awards on page 41. And for more AISES People doing amazing things, turn to page 16. One is Jason Baldes, who has succeeded in reintroducing bison to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Baldes plans to continue working with communities on cultural restoration and is living what his elders taught him; be strong in who you are and be who you want to be.

Summer 2017

June 2017
Digital Only
  • 10 Top STEM Fields: Look into these areas for career growth
  • Closing the Circle: Innovative SIPI programs empower STEM Students
  • AISES People: Meet our members
  • Career Builder: Government, industry, academia and tribal enterprise opportunities

Welcome to the Summer 2017 issue of Winds of Change! This is a special edition for us because it marks the first issue of our magazine to be published exclusively by AISES. It is an exciting — and fitting — step for AISES as we mark our 40th anniversary. Previously, since the inception of the magazine in 1986, we had worked closely with full-service publishing companies to produce our member publication. Now we have taken it in house, working with the same creative team that has brought you Winds of Change since 2010 to ensure continuity and deliver the magazine you have come to expect from AISES. An important part of that mission, of course, is helping our members advance on their personal STEM paths. In this issue, you will find a rundown of 10 STEM fields where career opportunities are expected to show significant growth, along with a sampling of current job openings and academic programs that offer training in relevant skills. On page 26 are some of exciting programs in STEM education that are making SIPI a role model for other tribal colleges. And as we bring you in every issue, there’s news of members and chapters in "AISES Notebook," profiles of members in "AISES People," and ideas for opportunities in education and careers in "Paths in Education" and "Career Builder."

Spring 2017

April 2017

  • The Top 50 STEM Workplaces: Orgainzations setting the standard for Native American STEM Professionals
  • 40 Years of AISES: The history and people of AISES
  • AISES People: Meet our Members
  • Paths in Education: Programs and internships for students and professionals

Welcome to the Spring 2017 issue of Winds of Change! This is an especially exciting year for AISES because it marks our 40th anniversary as an organization. We will be celebrating that milestone all year long, starting with the article on page 30 that helps us both remember our beginnings and look toward the future. Also in this issue is our annual look at the Top 50 Workplaces for Native American STEM professionals. These are corporations, organizations, and government agencies where you can count on developing your career in an environment that is welcoming, supportive, and open to your contributions. And, as always, this issue brings you profiles of members in "AISES People," news of AISES and our members and chapters in "AISES Notebook," and ideas for opportunities in academia, government, tribal enterprises, and the corporate world in "Career Builder."

Welcome to the Winds of Change 2015 National Conference Wrap-Up issue. We hope you will agree that these pictures and stories capture the amazing energy of that event. Even if you were not able to be with us in Phoenix, this edition will evoke some of that “Strive, Rise, Thrive” spirit. It was great to see so many members benefiting from the Concurrent Sessions, networking at get-togethers, and being inspired by the ceremonies. Starting on page 16 is a run-down of the corporations, agencies, nonprofits, and colleges and universities at the College and Career Fair. Opportunities to learn and connect are everywhere at the National Conference. We hope to see you at a future AISES event.
