Chapter Spotlight: AISES Phoenix Professional Chapter

There are many good reasons why one hundred Phoenix-based AISES members are active participants in the city’s Professional Chapter. For many, the most important is the opportunity to make a difference for Natives in STEM. Chapter members mentor individual students and offer guidance to the College Chapters at Arizona State, the University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. The chapter is so invested in the success of the state’s students that every fall members raise $10,000 for scholarships and leadership programs through the Phoenix AISES Golf Tournament — and they’ve been at it for 17 years. Many chapter members also serve on the boards of other nonprofits and help organize powwows and other culturally important events.

“Our members and supporters spend countless hours and resources to help ensure the future of Indian Country in STEM,” says Leon Begay, the chapter president. “We are very proud of our members and encourage them to be role models, especially to provide inspiration to Indian Country.” Other officers are Kevin Descheenie, vice president; Martin Manuel, secretary; and Louis Sisto, treasurer. The chapter meets monthly at different locations around the metro area, and members get together socially as well. “Many of our members have found care, assistance, and community in AISES,” says Begay.
