Are you ready for this year’s AISES National Conference? Join Indigenous STEM professionals and students from across the United States and Canada from October 19–21, 2023, in Spokane, Wash. Over the course of three days, you’ll have the chance to network with other professionals, learn new information that you can apply to your own career, and discover the many opportunities and programs offered through AISES. With so much to do and see, here are a few ways you can get ready for the conference.
Do a Little Prep Work
You’re a busy working professional, but it will serve you well to set aside some time to prepare for the conference. Look over the list of speakers, sessions, and presentations, and highlight those you want to be sure to see. Confirm all of your travel arrangements, ensure your manager and colleagues know you’ll be out of the office, and arrange for your work to be covered while you are away. Preparing now will make for a less stressful and more productive conference experience.
Practice, Practice, Practice
If you are scheduled to speak at the conference, make sure you prepare, review, and rehearse your presentation before you arrive. There’s nothing worse than discovering your slides are out of order when you’re in the midst of presenting. Take care to ensure your speech aligns with any presentation materials you have. After your deliver your presentation, you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the conference knowing you did your best.
Network
The AISES National Conference is a great way to expand your network and connect with people whom you might not have the chance to meet otherwise. Remember, though, the conference is a three-day marathon, not a sprint. Don’t feel pressured to meet dozens of people the first day. Set a realistic goal to meet at least five new people each day. This will help you expand your overall network while having unrushed, meaningful exchanges.
Pass Out Business Cards
Don’t let new introductions be forgotten. While business cards may seem old school, it takes less time to hand someone a card than it does to add a contact to your phone. Bring plenty of updated business cards that you can give to individuals as you meet them. And don’t forget to ask for cards. The goal is to return home with a stack of cards to add to your own networking list.
Use Social Media
Social media can be a great way to enhance your conference experience. Follow AISES social media channels and see if AISES is following people you may want to connect with. Also, AISES may provide updates to attendees prior to the conference or share new information during the event. Even once you return home from Spokane, you may find it helpful — or even just fun — to scroll through conference content.
The AISES National Conference is an amazing opportunity to connect with other Indigenous professionals in the STEM fields — not to mention expand your network, practice your presentation skills, and learn from others’ experiences. Keep these tips in mind to make the most of your time in Spokane.
ON TOPIC
With so much on the agenda during the AISES National Conference, it’s important to reflect on what you want to get out of the three days in Spokane. What will fulfill you personally and what events will likely have the most impact on you professionally? Here are a few must-dos from veteran National Conference-goers.
Remember who you are. Be proud of your Indigenous roots by proudly displaying it each day. Donning your moccasins, bolo tie, ribbon skirt, or beaded accessories strengthens your culture. Indigenous-made accessories, like silver and turquoise pins look great on lapels. A Lauren Good Day or B. Yellowtail scarf can bring a suit or simple skirt to the next level. Wearing a traditional hairstyle also is a great option. In short, Indigenous wear is professional wear. And Sequoyah Fellows, be sure to wear your Sequoyah Medal. If anyone is curious about how to become a Sequoyah Fellow, there will be an information desk in Spokane, where they can learn more.
Plan for today. Prior to landing in Spokane, read through the program and highlight the sessions and events you consider must-sees. Be certain to take advantage of the many opportunities to network with people in (and outside) your field. Download the AISES app on your smartphone to get the latest news and updates — and free up some space for all the swag you’ll collect at the Exhibit Hall. Be sure to take in the keynote speakers whose stories are sure to inspire you.
Guide the next generation. Many young people attend the AISES National Conference, and Native youth are our future. Stop by the student research poster displays to learn about their latest scientific findings and encourage them to continue pursuing answers. Perhaps you could become a mentor or could share your own knowledge as a session presenter next year?
Enjoy your time in Spokane, and make the most of your time at the AISE National Conference. Safe travels!
